All about laboratory grown diamonds...

But how do you grow a diamond?

Mined diamonds are formed in the earth's mantle where a source of carbon is subjected to incredibly high temperatures and pressures. In just the right environment, this raw carbon will crystallise into a diamond, which is then brought to the earth's surface by volcanic activity.

Laboratory grown diamonds replicate this natural process in a controlled environment.

Let's break it down into simple steps...

  • First...

A rich source of pure carbon is placed into specialist machinery designed for growing diamonds and other precious gemstones.

  • Second...

Depending on the method used, the carbon material is heated to very high temperatures ('CVD' method), and may also be placed under high pressure ('HTHP' method).

  • Third...

Over a short time, the super-heated / high pressured carbon crystallises into a rough diamond. This is then cut and polished like any other diamond.

So, what are the advantages of grown diamonds?

Environmentally Friendly

The process of mining diamonds has a significant environmental impact, including habitat destruction, water pollution, and carbon emissions. Grown diamonds typically have a smaller ecological footprint, as they require less energy to produce and do not involve large-scale disruption to the land and its ecosystems.

Ethical

Grown diamonds are free from many of the concerns associated with mined diamonds, such as conflict funding and blood diamonds, human rights abuses, and criminal financing. Grown diamonds generally offer an ethical and more socially responsible alternative.

Pure

Laboratory grown diamonds utilise innovative technologies to create diamonds with fewer impurities and defects compared to mined stones. This control over the production process results in higher quality diamonds with better clarity and fewer inclusions.

Cost-Effective

Grown diamonds are significantly less expensive than earth-mined diamonds. This is due to the more predictable and scalable production process, which eliminates many of high costs associated with the mining industry. Grown diamonds are up to 95% less expensive than their earth-mined equivalents.
